The Children of Buchenwald

Following the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp in April 1945, more than a thousand Jewish children faced an uncertain future. They had miraculously survived, yet most were orphans. An international relief effort led by the Œuvre de Secours aux Enfants took them under its wing and sought to provide them with a sense of security.

In June 1945, 426 of them found refuge in Normandy for the summer. Many were ill, traumatised and homeless. Doctors, teachers and social workers looked after them, helping them to regain their strength and, step by step, rediscover their joy in life.

Drawing on the survivors’ memories, historian Dominique Missika tells the moving story of the children of Buchenwald in this graphic novel.
